A taste of history at Le Cérasus, Saint-Savin
We had some points on The Fork app that were going to expire, so as the opportunity arose, we decided to treat ourselves to a proper lunch. As pescatarians, finding a restaurant in the heart of France that truly caters to our tastes can be a bit tricky, most places in the region are decidedly meaty affairs. But luck was on our side the day we discovered Le Cérasus.
Where history meets hospitality
Tucked away within the historic grounds of the Abbaye de Saint-Savin, you’re in for a treat that extends far beyond the plate. The restaurant sits within the grounds of the extraordinary abbey, a place that feels as much like a living museum as it does a spiritual sanctuary. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is nothing short of spectacular, its walls have witnessed nearly a thousand years of history, and its stories are written in every weathered stone and painted mural.

Le Cérasus is housed in the former Logis de l’Abbé, this unique spot is a building with real character, originally constructed in the 17th century in a classic style, it was later given a striking neo-Gothic makeover in the 19th century with the addition of a crenellated tower. This tower, a local landmark, gives the restaurant a fairy-tale silhouette and sets it apart from the rest of the abbey’s architecture.
The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by ancient stonework that’s stood the test of time, yet somehow feels inviting rather than imposing. The space blends centuries of history with a warm, contemporary vibe, making you feel instantly at home.

Oh and, don’t be surprised if your visit stretches well beyond the meal. After you’ve finished your coffee or dessert, take a relaxing wander outside to digest. The Gartempe river glides gently past, its waters sparkling in the sunlight, while the graceful stone bridge, a picture-perfect slice of French countryside, arches elegantly over the river. Stroll along the banks, watch the local wildlife (there are some interesting birds out there), and let the tranquillity of the abbey’s surroundings work its magic.

The food: authentic, seasonal, and passionate
The menu at Le Cérasus is a celebration of the region’s bounty. The chefs here are committed to sourcing from local producers, favouring short supply chains and seasonal ingredients. This philosophy shines through in every dish: expect plates that are not only visually appealing but also packed with flavour and creativity.
There’s a palpable passion in the kitchen, and it shows. Whether you opt for the fish or the vegetarian options, each plate is thoughtfully executed. Presentation is elegant without being fussy, letting the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves.
King and queen service
What also sets Le Cérasus apart is the genuine warmth of its service. We felt cared for. The staff’s attentiveness ensures that every need is met, almost like being at a friend’s table where nothing is too much trouble. That kind of hospitality is rare these days, and it turned a lovely lunch into a truly memorable afternoon.

Final thoughts
Le Cérasus is a popular spot, so booking ahead is wise, especially on weekends or during the summer months. The restaurant is family-friendly and offers options for private dining, making it suitable for gatherings of all sizes. Payment is easy, with all major credit cards accepted, and there’s ample parking nearby.
The restaurant is a destination. It’s a place where history, hospitality, and great food come together to create a memorable experience. Whether you’re passing through Saint-Savin or making a special trip, this is a table worth reserving. The combination of authentic cuisine, a stunning setting, and heartfelt service makes Le Cérasus a standout in the region, a place you’ll want to return to again and again.
So, if you find yourself in the heart of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, do yourself a favour and step through that medieval tower. You’ll be glad you did.
